Budget home gym flooring

I'm in the process of finishing out my home gym and flooring is the next big piece. The usual rubber flooring options at fitness stores are either thin, overpriced, or both, so I've been looking at horse mats as a more practical alternative. They're thick, heavy, and way cheaper per square foot compared to the stuff marketed for gyms.
From what I've seen, the trade offs are smell, weight, and maybe not being as perfectly cut as commercial gym tiles. Still, for barbell work and general durability they look tough to beat. I'm mostly after something that can take the abuse of deadlifts and dropped weights without denting or shifting around

yeah, I can tell you that the smell is real. to deal with this, just give the mats a thorough scrub with a strong degreaser or dish soap and let them air out outside for a few days to a week
